About

I'm a Rwandan-American, a Tutsi genocide survivor, and a technologist. During the Tutsi genocide, the majority of my family and loved ones were killed as a result of misinformation that dehumanized Tutsis and incited our elimination.

My personal experiences before the genocide (which included never-ending home searches and the imprisonment of loved ones), immediately after it (the inequitable distribution of emergency supplies by NGOs), and in its aftermath (the lack of knowledge surrounding the location or disposal of my loved ones' remains) have given me a profound understanding of the power of information and technology to shape people's lives.

As a result, I've dedicated my life's work to using technology to serve others—most recently as the founder of Echoroot (echoroot.io). I am committed to delivering accurate, relevant, and unbiased information from reliable sources. I believe it is vital to provide people with a variety of perspectives so that they can make informed choices. And people should never have to sacrifice their privacy, since its loss can have disastrous consequences.

My work

As a subject matter expert, I've had the opportunity to work for companies like Stack Overflow, where I led a cross-functional team of data scientists, data engineers, software engineers, data analysts, and user researchers. Together, we provided the world's technologists with relevant, timely, and community-vetted knowledge through a better search tool—combining traditional information retrieval methods with cutting-edge machine learning and GenAI to empower technologists to do their best work.

I've also worked on civic technology that most Americans use, through Code for America and U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) hackathons.

I've participated in the Schloss Dagstuhl seminars, held at a computer science research center in Germany where information retrieval, AI, and natural language processing researchers and practitioners from around the world meet to research, discuss, and learn about new trends and techniques.
